Roman Museum Vienna

At Hoher Markt in Vienna’s historic centre, the Roman Museum takes visitors back to the ancient settlement of Vindobona, once home to a Roman legion.

The archaeological remains provide an insight into everyday life for Roman soldiers and civilians. Visitors can see the remains of residential buildings as well as objects such as toys, tableware, religious artefacts and traces of wall paintings.

Modern displays and reconstructions help visitors imagine what Roman Vienna looked like. The settlement developed around a legionary fortress and already featured infrastructure such as covered walkways, sewage systems and a functioning water supply.

The exhibition also presents aspects of entertainment and everyday urban life, including theatres, baths and shops. A multilingual video guide provides additional information throughout the museum.
